Phone Support
NAMI of Lake County offers phone support at (847) 249-1515. This is NOT a crisis hotline but rather a place for people to call when they are looking for resources, information on upcoming meetings, or their questions regarding dealing with neurobiological brain disorders answered. Messages left on the phone line are picked up at least once a week by NAMI of Lake County volunteers.

The Lake County Resource Guide for Mental Illness and Other Neurobiological Brain Disorders
The guide was published in March 2001 and is a guide to information and services for the individuals suffering from depression, schizophrenia, and other neurobiological brain disorders. To view the latest Lake County Resource Guide for Mental Illness and Other Neurobiological Brain Disorders and other information regarding the guide, see our Resource Guide page.

Meetings and Support Groups
NAMI of Lake County offers monthly educational meetings as well as many support groups each month. To view more detailed information on our meetings and support groups, see our Meeting Schedule page.

Crisis Intervention Training
Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) programs are designed to educate and prepare police officers who come into contact with people with severe neurobiological brain disorders to recognize the signs and symptoms of these illnesses, and to respond effectively and appropriately to people who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis. Because police officers are often the first responders in these incidents, it is essential that they know how critical periods of neurobiological brain disorders alter behaviors and perceptions, can assess what is needed in the moment, and can bring understanding and compassion when they are handling these difficult situations.

CIT provides them with the skills to make a safer intervention for themselves, for the person in a crisis, for the person’s family and for the community. A key feature of the training teaches police officers effective methods of de-escalating the crisis situation and "reaching" the person in crisis. This approach allows consumers in distress to participate in the decisions about their treatment and facilitates consensus about the immediate safe course to follow.

To view more information on CIT programs and program contacts, view the CIT page on the NAMI Illinois web site.
